How I Write

The past couple of years, I’ve seldom been able to write without interruption. Until February 2021, I provided 24/7 care for my mother. Since her passing, I share my elderly disabled father’s care with my sister. He likes his TV, and he likes it loud. So for two weeks a month, I deal with the distraction and try to work in spite of it. It’s not always easy when he’s demanding attention. I wouldn’t trade my time with him for anything, though. So if the going gets tough, I’ll keep going.

So when I actually sit down to write, I have a general idea of where the scene is going and then I just let the words flow out onto the page. Eventually, I have a scene and I can move on to the next. It’s not rocket science.

It just flows from somewhere deep inside. I call that place my muse. It’s where my imagination and every ounce of creativity lives. Everyone should have their own personal muse.

Clean Desk

The top of my desk has always been the repository of clutter. I like to keep the things that are needed throughout my day close to hand. That can include my medications, coffee, water, remotes, phones, note pads, sticky notes, a flashlight, pens, pencils and other sundry items. I do prefer they are organized and in their place. I hate having to search for things.

Defined Working Times

I learned that while caring for my parents, the only uninterrupted time to work was while they were sleeping. I’m a bit of a night owl, so that works out well. Dad also naps often. I squeeze in my work where I can. I just need to define my schedule better. Writing first, then business, that is the schedule I need to remember from day to day.

No Distractions

Life is full of distractions. If it isn’t what someone has put on the TV then it’s calls from my children and family. I’ve discovered the Brain Wave app and a set of headphones help. I also use the Freedom app to turn off the distraction of social surfing. Sometimes we get into the bad habits headspace and it’s helpful if you have things to get you back on track.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The Most Important Steps To Follow

l

Write A Lot

I know it’s important to write daily and as much as possible if I want to be successful. Putting this into practice is a little harder than knowing the concept. I’ll get there, eventually. It takes a while to get in the groove when you are a one-man band trying to learn and run a business, too.

Read A Lot

I’m not a speed reader, but I am an avid reader. I always have a couple of books started on my eReaders. I beta read for a favorite author. I read ARCs for several others. Then there are the books I binge. Reading is my reward. It takes me places I’ve never been and may never get the chance to go.

Spread Your Ideas

When I write, I do it for myself, but I really love sharing my stories with others. There is nothing like having someone guessing at where your story is going. Will they catch the clues you’ve sprinkled in your pages? How will they react to the plot twists? I absolutely love sharing my “What ifs?” with others.
